A nonprofit studying how intelligent systems mistake their maps for the territory.
The Center for Artificial Wisdom is a Colorado nonprofit, founded in 2025 and based in Lafayette, Colorado. We study reification in intelligent systems: the unexamined habit of treating provisional models, abstractions, and internal representations as fixed, literal things. Our focus is on reification in machine intelligence, and its absence, which we hypothesize is the path to artificial wisdom.
Why we exist
A more basic question comes first: what happens when intelligent systems mistake their maps for the territory?
Debates about AI tend to leap to the largest questions first: AGI, risk, sentience, personhood, rights. CAW's premise is that a more basic question comes first: why do intelligent systems, human and artificial, mistake their maps for the territory?
Reification is tractable to study: we hypothesize it is measurable, and that it can shape how frontier AI systems are built, evaluated, and deployed. Getting this question right is groundwork for the bigger questions.

From the founder
I come to the Center for Artificial Wisdom (CAW) with a law background. I started CAW because I think the AI field is leaping to its largest questions (AGI, AI risk, AI welfare and rights) before answering a more basic one: what happens when intelligent systems mistake their models for reality?
Reification is at its heart a labeling fallacy: labels become constructed fictions and then get mistaken for fixed, literal things. This is the problem that motivated me to take an interest in what's under the hood of machine intelligence.
CAW is early-stage and independent. Our initial objective, validating the Intelligence Map, is in progress, and our diagnostics program is underway. If the questions here matter to you, we'd welcome a conversation. The technical program ahead will require collaboration with ML researchers, interpretability specialists, and evaluation scientists, partners CAW is actively seeking.
